Hinojosa: “My priority as governor is to provide relief to Texans. The government is broken. It’s more of a burden than a help to the people right now.”
Laredo, TX – Last week, Democratic candidate for Texas governor Gina Hinojosa unveiled her new economic policy proposal as part of her “Money in Your Pocket” tour. In Houston, San Antonio and Laredo, Hinojosa spoke to Texans about their concerns about rising costs at a series of roundtables, small business tours and town halls.
As governor, Hinojosa will declare Texas’ affordability crisis an emergency and call on the Legislature to issue $1,500 refund checks to Texas families. The plan calls for using the state’s $27 billion Economic Stabilization Fund to provide direct aid to working Texans, leaving $10 billion in the fund to be automatically replenished for future emergencies.

In Houston, Hinojosa The tour began with a press conference at Pyburn’s Farm Fresh Foods in South Union, where she joined members of the United Food and Commercial Workers to unveil her new economic policies.
“At a time when Texans are struggling in this high-cost economy, we are all left paying for Greg Abbott’s crookedness.” Hinojosa said. “The Rainy Day Fund is running over the statutory cap. It’s time to give this money back to the people.”
Later that evening, Hinojosa hosted a town hall at the historic Eldorado Ballroom. “Greg Abbott is hoarding $27 billion – money that should work in the economy” Hinojosa told hundreds of participants. “It’s irresponsible to sit on that much money. I’m going to take $17 billion and give it to the people of Texas because the people know how to spend that money better than the government.”
Hinojosa concluded her time in Houston by touring a women’s health facility, where she heard from local providers about the challenges families face in receiving quality, affordable care.
In San Antonio, Hinojosa toured the Adelita Tamales & Tortilla Factory. At the factory, Hinojosa made tamales and spoke with the owner about how rising costs were preventing families from eating tamales every Sunday.
Hinojosa She later met with local small business owners for a roundtable discussion about how San Antonio’s economy is under pressure before her second Money in Your Pocket town hall at Paper Tiger.
“Right now we are paying into a system that is working against us” Hinojosa said. “There is no trust. Our most important job is to build that trust, and until then, we must do everything we can to help Texas families now. On day one, I will sign a proclamation declaring the high-cost crisis an emergency in the state of Texas, and I will ask the Legislature to place a bill on my desk to send $1,500 to every Texas family.”
In Laredo, Hinojosa I sat down with local business leaders to discuss how trade and tariffs affect prices for border communities and the entire state before the tour ended with a town hall visit.
