Last year, the Open Championship purse took a break from a steady annual increase that began in 2017 and decided to keep the cap at $17 million. But this year there has been an increase again. Prize money for the 2026 Open Championship has increased by $750,000 to $17.75 million.
Despite the record sum, the Open Championship remains the least lucrative of the four major championships – and is even well below the PGA Tour’s signature event’s prize money of $20 million. This year, the Masters and US Open each offered participants $22.5 million, while the PGA Championship brought in $20.5 million.
The Players Championship remains the richest tournament in golf with total prize money of $25 million.
This year’s Open champion will be paid $100,000 more than 2025 champion Scottie Scheffler, who had a $3.2 million payday. The second place winner will receive a whopping $1.842 million, and the third place winner will also receive a seven-figure sum with a payout of $1.181 million.
Even the players who missed the cut end up being generously compensated: the top ten players (and ties) on the wrong side of the cut get $12,900, the next 20 get $10,750, and the rest of the field get $9,100.
