The World Cup is often viewed as the game in its purest form, free of the eye-watering transfer fees and financial irregularities that often mar club football. But make no mistake, the flagship tournament has gigantic sums on offer.
Nations taking part in the 2026 World Cup will stand to pocket a huge sum just for taking part in this summer’s football festival, with the rewards for qualifying getting bigger with each round.
With 48 teams competing in North America – more than ever before – the total prize money is obviously higher and breaks all records from previous tournaments.
Here’s a detailed breakdown of exactly how much each nation will earn at this summer’s World Cup.

After FIFA agreed in April to further increase the prize pot for the 2026 World Cup, a record-breaking sum of $871 million will be distributed to participating countries. For comparison: At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar there was $440 million in the pot.
The majority of the prize is awarded based on progress through the rounds, but there are non-performance-based prizes that ensure less successful nations still succeed.
Unsurprisingly, the winner of the competition will be rewarded with the largest share of the available performance-based prizes, totaling $703 million. The eventual champion receives $51 million for his on-field performances, while the runner-up receives a comparatively meager $34 million.
The nations that finish third and fourth will receive $30 million and $28 million respectively, while the beaten quarter-finalists will have to accept $20 million in prize money. However, this sum is still double what the teams eliminated in the group stage earned.
Teams that reached the Round of 32 but failed to advance received $12 million, while those eliminated in the Round of 16 received a whopping $16 million.

Non-performance-related prize money at the 2026 World Cup
$168 million of FIFA’s total prize pot will be distributed to participants regardless of their on-field success.
Of that total, $2.5 million will be provided to each country as preparation funds to be used for things such as travel, accommodation and training camps. Each side will also receive a $10 million qualification fee.
The rest of the non-performance-based pot goes towards “additional team contributions”, which FIFA describes as “subsidies for the costs of team delegation and increased allocation of team tickets”.
This money is intended to create financial equality for all participants in view of the unavoidable logistical and administrative costs associated with participation in the World Cup.
