Millions of people now use Meta’s AI glasses every day to listen to music and podcasts, take hands-free photos and videos, quickly access an AI assistant, and more.
This is one of the fastest growing consumer goods of our lifetime. As more and more people get these glasses, we’d like to answer your questions about how they work and share more about how we keep both the wearer and those around them feeling comfortable.
Whether you’ve just bought your first pair or are currently thinking about it, here are answers to common questions we’ve heard.
Table of Contents
Who can see the photos and videos I take with my glasses?
You, and only you – unless you want to share them.
You can use your glasses as a hands-free camera. Photos and videos you take with your AI glasses for your gallery are stored privately on your glasses. You decide when you want to import them to your phone. Once imported to your phone, they’ll be saved to your phone’s gallery like any other photo or video you take.
It’s up to you whether you share them with your friends, post on social media or use Meta AI. If you choose to share it somewhere else – be it one of the meta apps or anywhere else on the internet – then it will work just like anything else shared there.
How do other people know that the glasses are taking a photo or video?
On the front of each of our AI glasses is a light we call Capture LED. Whenever content is being collected for your gallery, this white light will flash to let people know that you are collecting content. For a photo it flashes briefly, for a video it flashes as long as you record. The recording LED does not have an off switch.
It’s there to let people around you know when you take a photo or video, which you can save to your gallery and share with others. While cell phones and action cameras don’t have this on their cameras, we’ve had them since day one.
Why did Meta choose white light for this feature?
We know that wearable technology can only be successful if both those who wear glasses and those around them can trust it. We reviewed many options and found that the white light offers the best combination of visibility and experience.
We also conducted extensive testing to determine the right brightness level for daytime visibility and the right blink rate for videos. We not only listen to the feedback from millions of people who buy our glasses, but we continue to do so Discuss these features and more with leading experts to further improve them.
How about playing a loud sound in addition to the light?
There is a shutter sound that the person wearing it can hear, although it is simply not practical to make this sound audible from a distance. A light is also familiar from other personal electronic devices, such as a laptop camera or older generations of video recording devices.
Can’t you just cover up or deactivate the LED?
The camera will be disabled if anyone tries this. Starting with our second generation of glasses, the camera is automatically deactivated when we detect that the recording LED is blocked. No photos or videos can be taken until we determine that the light is cleared.
Since the introduction of this protection measure, we have seen some people go beyond using tape and make sophisticated efforts to modify or destroy the sensing LED. We continue to improve our ability to detect tampering and are now updating the glasses to disable the camera if it detects that the LED has been physically tampered with or destroyed. No other type of camera has achieved this and we are proud to be pushing the industry forward.
What about people who advertise LED manipulation services?
In addition to disabling the camera on devices when tampering is detected, we are working through Meta to remove ads, posts, and marketplace listings that promote these types of tampering services and will take action, up to and including suspending accounts that do so. We also take legal action against individuals or companies that sell capture LED manipulation services, both on and off our own platforms.
Will glasses get more privacy features?
As our glasses become more powerful and more widely available, our teams continue to work to make them even safer and more trustworthy. We set high standards for our AI glasses because we believe they are an essential part of any good technology.
