AI supercomputer goes online at Naval Postgraduate School

Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA, visited the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California today to commission one NVIDIA DGX GB300 system – Providing one of the world’s most powerful AI platforms to students, researchers and faculty at the U.S. military’s flagship graduate university, which is fully online.

“Our nation depends on our men and women fighting on the front lines. Nothing is more valuable to you than information and insight, timely to understand its impact and consequences,” Huang said at the event. “I can’t think of anything more important.”

The supercomputer DGX GB300 with NVIDIA Mission Control The software provides NPS’s more than 1,500 students and 600 on-site faculty access to comprehensive AI computing, including model training and inference capabilities for applications in weather forecasting, cybersecurity, and disaster resilience and response planning.

The commissioning, which took place during the school’s three-day Converge @ NPS event, marks the latest chapter in an ongoing collaboration to develop AI-based technologies at NPS for education and real-world applications.

It is based on an NVIDIA AI Technology Center on the Monterey campus – a dedicated center for AI research and academic teaching, now anchored by the DGX GB300.

“As we modernize our technology, we must also modernize the way we train our leaders,” said Admiral Samuel Paparo, commander of U.S. Pacific Command. “Access to advanced computing capabilities means that NPS students and faculty understand the opportunities and responsibilities these technologies bring.”

Training managers to build with AI

NPS trains active-duty officers and international partners in a variety of disciplines – from space operations to marine sciences – and awards graduate degrees, while each program focuses on applied research directly related to real-world problems.

“Leadership is about being in service of something else. You are in service of your team. You are in service of your country. You are in service of your mission,” Huang told attendees. “And all of these technologies are just tools to help you.”

The DGX GB300 brings new technical depth to these programs: the ability to train foundation models in-house, perform high-resolution large-scale simulations, and develop AI tools with immediate applicability.

Huang told participants that today’s computers with AI make it easy for them, even if they are not computer science experts.

“The most important advice I would give someone is to embrace technology,” Huang said. “It’s not as hard as you think, and the reason is that technology is fundamentally designed to get smarter over time.”

NVIDIA has also expanded the collaboration through its Deep Learning Instituteby putting instructor toolkits in the hands of NPS faculty so that AI is integrated into graduate curricula across departments.

“Many of you will be commanding in AI-powered environments. Information is transmitted at lightning speed, reducing response times,” Paparo said. “Our advantage will come from leaders like you who can use technology to see, understand, decide and act faster while exercising the judgment, experience and leadership that machines cannot provide. That training takes place here at NPS.”

From ocean models to digital twins

NPS regularly hosts hackathons that have led to advances in autonomy, ocean science, and operational planning—applied work that requires serious computation at scale.

Researchers use AI to model ocean conditions, predict atmospheric changes, and create digital twins of complex environments – work that feeds directly into the scientific areas in which NPS has deep expertise.

The DGX GB300 will now handle these workloads on campus.

Through the school’s partnership with MITERa non-profit organization, NPS has developed a framework based on this NVIDIA Omniverse Libraries that provide high-fidelity digital twin environments for simulating real-world navigation and decision-making under uncertain conditions.

The DGX GB300 at NPS was not created in isolation. DDN, LARGE And Vertive joined the effort as a hardware and systems integration partner.

DDN contributed a powerful data infrastructure to enable researchers to efficiently access, manage, protect and scale data for demanding AI workloads.

Vertiv provided the racks, cooling and power infrastructure required to bring the system online, as well as the installation sequence, testing and commissioning support, and fluid management and monitoring.
