Accenture was awarded an $821 million contract to further develop the Pentagon’s war data platform to improve AI-powered data and decision-making on the battlefield.

Accenture Federal Services will develop the core software that connects hundreds of military data streams to the largest platform powering the Pentagon’s artificial intelligence tools under a contract worth up to $821 million over five years, the department confirmed Monday.
The award advances the Pentagon’s efforts to further develop its War Data Platform, a clearinghouse of battlefield information that AI applications can process to inform troops about possible next steps and expedite wartime decisions.
Accenture beat out four other bidders vying for the contract. according to federal contract tracker HigherGov. The General Services Administration Capability Accelerator, a unit designed to accelerate the adoption of innovative tools for the federal government, presented the award on behalf of the Ministry of Defense.
The company will “support critical WDP data operations, integration of infrastructure and platform tools, robust cybersecurity measures and comprehensive service desk capabilities” and ensure “seamless interoperability,” the Pentagon’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office said in a news release Monday.

The department said its first order under the contract focuses on “high-impact, measurable mission outcomes that maximize the benefits of commercial pricing.” An Accenture spokesman did not respond Tuesday to emailed questions about what the work entails.
The war data platform emerged as part of the Pentagon’s Advana data sharing project, which was launched in 2018 as a tool for financial audits. Defense officials decided to spin the platform out of the larger Advana initiative to give it more attention for use in combat missions.
“The evolution of Advana’s data platform and application ecosystem over the past six years has resulted in a complex technical and programmatic architecture that we must now streamline to realize the full potential of AI and support warfighting, intelligence and business needs with the speed, security and auditability required,” Deputy Defense Secretary Steve Feinberg said in a January memo.
The platform aims to combine more than 1,500 commercial and military data sources to securely provide intelligence, targeting data and more to frontline troops and their commands, the AI office said, calling it “one of them.” [DoD]“s key data platforms for AI use and mission benefits.”
Cameron Stanley, chief digital and AI officer, recently said the platform demonstrated its value by delivering operational data to commanders more quickly during Operation Epic Fury, the U.S. military campaign in Iran.
“The War Data Platform has actually been quite successful,” Stanley said. according to GovCIO. “We were able to integrate dozens of new feeds in real time… and get data at the speed of the conflict.”
