OVERLAND PARK, KS – Today, Representative Sharice Davids joined Kansans who have benefited from middle-class tax cuts and the cost-cutting measures they have supported to highlight their work to reduce everyday expenses for working families. While Davids has fought to ensure tax policy provides real relief to everyday Kansans, extremists in Washington have passed a package that only benefits billionaires and wealthy corporations. Davids voted against it.
“At a time when Kansas families are struggling with rising costs, extreme politicians in Washington chose to give massive tax breaks to billionaires and wealthy corporations rather than provide real relief to working people,” he said David’s. “I know firsthand how important every dollar is – I was raised by a single mother who worked hard to put food on the table and make ends meet. That experience shaped my commitment to fighting for policies that reduce costs for working families and ensure tax cuts benefit Kansans who need it most – not just those at the top.”

The press conference featured Kansas residents who shared how tax cuts have made a meaningful difference in their lives, including savings on health care, energy bills and the everyday costs of raising a family. The speakers included:
- Crystal Henry (Start Young Manager at Futures First): Discussed how the child tax credit helped her family meet everyday expenses and support her two children.
- “The child tax credit gave me some wiggle room in my budget as a single parent. Every dollar counts as grocery and gas costs rise, and the child tax credit came in time to get us through the summer. I’m grateful that Rep. Davids always fights to lower costs for families like mine,” said Crystal Henry.
- Eileen Spickler (Retiree and health care advocate): Shared how the Affordable Care Act improved premium tax credits helped make health insurance more affordable and provide financial security.
- Malcolm Proudfit (Chief Executive Officer at Good Energy Solutions, Inc.): Discussed how clean energy tax credits through the Inflation Reduction Act have helped make solar and energy efficiency upgrades more affordable for Kansas homeowners and families.
- “Investing in solar can help homeowners reduce their carbon footprint and ease the burden on their wallets. Clean energy tax credits in the IRA made these investments possible for many working families who otherwise would not have been able to afford them. We live in a time where we need more electricity production than ever before, and these types of credits help solar systems come online and ease the strain on our grid,” he said Malcolm Proudfit.
The press conference comes as many Kansas households continue to report financial pressures due to rising inflation and reckless policy decisions in Washington that only favor billionaires. The average family pays more than $2,500 extra this year due to tariffs and is expected to spend about $740 more on gas. Last year, electricity prices for private households rose by 13 percent nationwide, and families have more than paid $300 more for food.
Davids discussed her work to reduce costs for Kansans, including her efforts Cap insulin at $35 for seniors, lower prescription drug prices through Medicare negotiationexpand affordable housing provide, strengthen Agriculture in Kansas and local food systems, support Year-round access to E15 fuel Lowering gas pump prices and expanding the Affordable Care Act Tax credits helping families afford health insurance. She also emphasized her opposition to it reckless tariffs and extreme Medicaid cuts that are closing rural hospitals and increasing healthcare costs for Kansas families.
Davids was raised by a single mother who served in the Army for 20 years. She knows how difficult it is to put food on the table, squeeze every dollar, and make difficult decisions between paying for groceries, healthcare, gas, or rent. That experience continues to shape her focus on reducing costs for working families and ensuring that everyday people – not just billionaires and big corporations – have a fair chance to get ahead.
