Nineteen Republicans in the House of Representatives are demanding answers from New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill about how about 6,600 self-identified non-citizens were registered to vote and cast 400 ballots in what the state described as a software error.
The group asked Sherrill the question in a letter released Friday afternoon.
“Despite these responses, there is alleged to have been a software error in the transmission of their voter registration information between June 2023 and June 2024. This was not a minor bureaucratic discrepancy,” the group wrote in the letter. “It was a catastrophic breakdown of the most basic protections in our election system: ensuring that only eligible American citizens are registered and allowed to vote. How do you know this was just a software glitch and not a nefarious act?”
The letter further underscores Republicans’ concerns that lawmakers are pushing election security mandates without passing laws that support voter identification and implement federal standards to ensure proof of citizenship.

Signatories included Rep. Jefferson Van Drew, R-N.J., and Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., two of New Jersey’s three Republican congressmen.
Notably, the third party, Rep. Tom Kean Jr., R-N.J., did not join.
The public initially became aware of the system failure when Sherrill disclosed the problem in an announcement on Tuesday.
“Last week, I learned that a serious software flaw in New Jersey’s motor vehicle system resulted in the registration of approximately 6,600 people who said they were not U.S. citizens between June 2023 and June 2024, nearly three years before I took office,” Sherrill said.

“These individuals answered “no” when asked on a keyboard whether they were U.S. citizens when they applied for driver’s licenses and identification cards, but the system registered them anyway through no fault of their own.”
Republicans listed a series of questions in their letter that they said the state should answer, including the tests it typically conducts to maintain voter rolls, the specific counties where the bogus ballots were cast and whether Sherrill’s administration would support voter ID legislation.

“Republicans have been sounding the alarm for years about weaknesses in voter registration systems, inadequate maintenance of voter rolls, and the risk of noncitizens being registered and allowed to vote in national elections, which is illegal under federal law,” the letter said.
The group has requested a response to its questions by August 21, 2026 at the latest.
